Which types of wood are suitable for a cutting board with a 3D pattern?
A 3D pattern creates the illusion of a play of light and shadow in the brain. For this optical illusion to occur at all, three wood colors are necessary: light, medium, and dark. Maple and cherry are excellent choices for light and medium tones, which is why these woods are used very often. For the dark tone, woods such as walnut or thermo-treated ash are used. Of course, we can also vary the wood types to a certain extent if you prefer a different kind of wood. The only wood that doesn’t work well in a 3D pattern is beech, because it warps too much when used as end grain and can crack.
How is a cutting board with a 3D pattern made?
It’s almost impossible to explain this in just a few words because the process is very complex. Depending on the pattern, different types of wood are combined in specific ways, glued together, and cut into strips. These strips must be rotated, reassembled, and cut again. This process is repeated until the desired pattern emerges. As a woodworking professional, I know which patterns are feasible and can advise you accordingly. What sizes are the cutting boards with 3D patterns available in?
The boards I’ve made so far are available in the three standard sizes: S, M, and L. Upon request, I can also create custom sizes. However, the design also plays a role here, as some designs, for example, are only possible in a square shape. I’d be happy to advise you on how large your custom board can be.
